The Microsoft Exchange Server is efficient messaging and collaboration server software that runs on servers to send and receive electronic mail and other forms of interactive communication through computer networks. The Microsoft Exchange Server is widely used by the businesses using Microsoft foundation. The deployment of Microsoft Exchange Server system provides state-of-the-art application acceleration features along with centralized, intelligent traffic management. The first original version, the Exchange Server 4.0 was released on June 11, 1996. The next version Exchange 5.0 was released on May 23, 1997. It introduced the new Exchange Administrator console along with an "integrated" access to SMTP-based networks. The Exchange 5.0 had the capability of communicating directly with servers using the new mail standard and an add-in called the Internet Mail Connector. The version 5.0 also introduced a new Web-based email interface called Exchange Web Access and was renamed as Outlook Web Access in a later Service pack. The Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 was released on February 3, 1998 in two different editions; Standard and Enterprise. These two editions differ in database storage size, mail transport connectors and clustering skills. The Standard Edition was released with a database size limitation of 16GB whereas the Enterprise edition could support a database of 8TB and with an extra feature of clustering. The version 6.0 or Exchange 2000 was released on November 29, 2000. This version supported maximum sizes of databases and increased the number of servers in a cluster from two to four.
The current version is Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 or simply version 6.5. The Exchange 2003 comprises a new feature of enhanced disaster recovery which allows the administrator to take with the server online sooner. The product also has better anti-virus and anti-spam protection, providing built-in APIs that facilitate filtering software and built-in support for the basic methods of originating IP address. Exchange 2003 has the ability to omit inbound e-mail before being fully processed, thus preventing delays in the message routing system. The product was shipped in Standard and Enterprise editions. The Standard edition supported one message database per server and supported databases up to 16GB. The release of Service Pack 2 enabled the Standard edition to support a database of 75GB.
