Network Engineering Jobs
Network connectivity is very much essential for the emerging business world. Network engineering has a vital role in establishing and maintaining this capability of network connectivity at corporations, hospitals and universities. Network Engineering is a vast field and is involved in various industrial sectors like telecommunication, computers, and radio technologies. In telecommunication, network engineering is involved with determining internetworking service components for switched networks, developing and executing hardware and software to meet them. Network engineering in computers deals with the hardware and software to complete the purpose of design of a computer network. In radio communications it is involved with developing network topologies.
In computing, network engineering involves building, maintaining, and administering computer networks. This practice varies from company to company, but it frequently involves troubleshooting hardware and software, providing software support and system design and analysis. There are generally four types of computer networks; Local Area Network (LAN), Wide Area Network (WAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), and Global Area Network (GAN). The job of Network Engineering engrosses setting up a network for the client by the network engineers. The engineers are suppose to work with the network manager in designing and configuring systems that improves efficiency and manage capacity to meet client business necessities. The network engineers should be involved on a daily administration of the system after its installation. The various job activities involved in network engineering are installation and support for new hardware and software, setting up user accounts, permission and passwords, maintaining adequate security at the junction point of networks and Internet, monitoring network usage, fault diagnosis and rectification, implementing preventative maintenance schedules, technical support for end users, providing training on new systems, working with other IT professionals and planning and implementing future developments.
For the job of network engineering, a candidate must posses excellent IT and analytical skills, ability to prioritize tasks, capability to explain technical issues clearly, ability to work within a team, should have good interpersonal skills, have an excellent working knowledge of networking technologies and the capability to keep up to date with latest developments. A network engineer must have the knowledge of using basic network devices like 'packet sniffers’. An efficient network engineer must have the knowledge of set up and configuration – stand alone, peer-to-peer, client-server, LAN, MAN, WAN and GAN networks; hubs, routers and switches; networking protocols, such as TCP, IP, FTP and VOIP (internet telephony); data transmission technologies - Ethernet, ISDN, ASDL, wireless, and ATM; and network security – firewalls, anti-virus software and virtual private networks.
Networking engineers work in a variety of sectors including finance, retail, local and national government, the health service and utility companies. Opportunities exist within larger IT firms, either dealing with the company's own systems or working in their contract services.
